In
the 1970s one of Margaret's many roles for Singer Australia spanning over
30 years was State Educational Supervisor, where most of her time was
spent travelling throughout Victoria and interstate, teaching staff how
to use that popular 70’s icon, the knitting machine.
In 1980 Margaret
married to become Margaret Dimitriou and, although leaving the fashion/textiles
industry for a short time, was able to apply her creativity to the family
framing business in Richmond, where her exceptional eye for detail and
aesthetics was further nurtured.
The 1990’s brought the development of her own christening
wear label, Margaret Ellen Pty Ltd, making beautiful christening gowns
and suits which she wholesaled to select children’s wear boutiques
in Melbourne and Sydney. This exercise proved transitory as she was lured
back to Singer Australia as State Sales Manager – Victoria, Tasmania,
offering her the opportunity to travel locally and at the same time, encourage
young designers to explore textiles and bring sewing back into the home.
Margaret’s work in this area was further enhanced when she took
on the Singer role of National Educator, travelling to many countries
teaching and studying all aspects of creative sewing including the modern
phenomenon of digitized embroidery.
Throughout this time Margaret was in much demand as a contributor to renowned
creative sewing magazines such as Stitches, Creative Expressions and Machine
Embroidery.
Ultimately the pull towards designing her own range of lingerie proved
too strong, as Margaret determined in 2006 to fulfill her dream of starting
her own lingerie brand that would flatter and enhance the femininity of
women of all shapes and sizes.
Diamonds
& Lace is the fruit of Margaret's McGillivrays
life's experience, passion and expertise.
