About Diamonds & Lace ......................................

Diamonds & Lace
is an innovative and exciting new concept in lingerie design and development. Who ever heard of sensuous and elegant lingerie for women outside the media perpetuated size 8-14 market? Margaret McGillivray, owner and designer for this exciting new label, is dedicated to making you feel sexy and gorgeous, but most of all, alluringly feminine in lingerie that is designed to not just fit, but flatter your figure, regardless of what “size” you are classed!

I have always been creative and loved fashion, colour and elegance in clothing. I have been size 18-20 most of my adult life and when shopping for lingerie I became disillusioned as most of the sexy and pretty pieces did not go up to my size and those that did were far from flattering.” Margaret says of her inspiration to create her clothing label.

Margaret’s background in the fashion industry extends to her very early days in the 1960’s studying her Diploma of Needlecraft at the prominent textiles college, Emily McPhersons (now RMIT Fashion/Textiles). Her love for lingerie showed itself in her final year, when she entered a competition for final year students and first year trade designers, sponsored by Fibremakers. Her first prize for the most original designs in nightgowns reflected her future aspirations and introduced her to the field of lingerie early on in her career.

Margaret's first role was of designer/pattern maker for Treble A and Lilliput in Moonee Ponds, one of the largest lingerie factories in cosmopolitan Melbourne, and later as a dressmaker for Allouette in the Block Arcade, Collins Street, Melbourne. These years saw Margaret’s creative juices flow, dressmaking and designing wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses, Mother of the Bride and evening gowns for her own clients.

In the 1970s one of Margaret's many roles for Singer Australia spanning over 30 years was State Educational Supervisor, where most of her time was spent travelling throughout Victoria and interstate, teaching staff how to use that popular 70’s icon, the knitting machine.

In 1980 Margaret married to become Margaret Dimitriou and, although leaving the fashion/textiles industry for a short time, was able to apply her creativity to the family framing business in Richmond, where her exceptional eye for detail and aesthetics was further nurtured.

The 1990’s brought the development of her own christening wear label, Margaret Ellen Pty Ltd, making beautiful christening gowns and suits which she wholesaled to select children’s wear boutiques in Melbourne and Sydney. This exercise proved transitory as she was lured back to Singer Australia as State Sales Manager – Victoria, Tasmania, offering her the opportunity to travel locally and at the same time, encourage young designers to explore textiles and bring sewing back into the home.

Margaret’s work in this area was further enhanced when she took on the Singer role of National Educator, travelling to many countries teaching and studying all aspects of creative sewing including the modern phenomenon of digitized embroidery.

Throughout this time Margaret was in much demand as a contributor to renowned creative sewing magazines such as Stitches, Creative Expressions and Machine Embroidery.

Ultimately the pull towards designing her own range of lingerie proved too strong, as Margaret determined in 2006 to fulfill her dream of starting her own lingerie brand that would flatter and enhance the femininity of women of all shapes and sizes.

Diamonds & Lace is the fruit of Margaret's McGillivrays life's experience, passion and expertise.
